Moshe Rabbeinu has been on Mount Sinai for almost 40 days. The Jewish People miscalculate when he’s supposed to come back – and so on day 39 they believe that Moshe died on the mountain. Not knowing what to do next, the Jewish People panic and force Aharon (Moshe’s brother) to make a Golden Calf that they can worship! When Moshe finally returns and sees the Jewish People worshipping an idol, he breaks the two tablets with the 10 commandments written on them. Hashem threatens to destroy the Jewish People, but Moshe prays on their behalf. Teaching us the 13 Attributes of Mercy, Hashem ultimately forgives the Jewish People and Moshe goes up Mount Sinai once more to get new tablets…Come to Shul this Shabbat to learn more!
JOKES
It’s the World Cup Final, and a man makes his way to his seat right next to the pitch. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbour if someone will be sitting there. ‘No,’ says the neighbour. ‘The seat is empty.’ ‘This is incredible,’ said the man. ‘Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Final and not use it?’ The neighbour says, ‘Well actually the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first World Cup Final we haven’t been to together since we got married.’ ‘Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s terrible….But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend, relative or even a neighbour to take her seat?’ The man shakes his head. ‘No,’ he says. ‘They’re all at the funeral.’

Shabbat Hero
Levi ben Gershon (1288-1344), better known as Gersonides or the Ralbag, was a Rabbi, philosopher, Talmudist, mathematician, physician and astronomer. Little is known of his life, however he was well known in the Jewish community due to his commentaries on the Chumash and certain books of Tanach. He additionally authored commentaries on philosophy, mathematical theory (Ma’aseh Choshev), and was an active astronomer. He is credited to have invented the ‘Jacob’s Staff’, an instrument used to measure the angular distance between celestial objects. The lunar crater ‘Rabbi Levi’ is named after him.

This week’s Parsha begins by listing all of the rewards that Hashem will bless the Jewish People with if they (and we) keep all of his Mitzvot. We also learn about the seven species that Israel is famous for: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates! In this Parsha, we are also reminded about the sin of the golden calf that took place in the book of Shemot: Moshe smashed the first Tablets with the Ten Commandments on them when he saw the Jews worshipping the golden calf. Luckily, with lots of davening, Moshe was able to convince Hashem to forgive the Jewish People. The second paragraph of the Shema is also in this week’s Parsha, which teaches us about the concept of being rewarded for performing the Mitzvot, and being punished if we do the opposite…come to Shul this Shabbat to learn more!
